When do I file my income tax return?

2 min read
TL;DR
You file your income tax return (aangifte inkomstenbelasting) before 1 May of the year after the tax year. You can request an extension (uitstel), usually until 1 September, or longer through a tax service provider. You file via Mijn Belastingdienst with DigiD; always check the pre-filled return (vooraf ingevulde aangifte) yourself.

You file your income tax return (aangifte inkomstenbelasting) before 1 May of the year after the tax year, so for 2025 that is by 1 May 2026 at the latest. If you cannot make it in time, you can request an extension (uitstel) so you get more room. You can find more topics for individuals on our individuals hub.

When is the deadline for the income tax return?

The deadline for the income tax return (aangifte inkomstenbelasting) is 1 May of the year after the tax year, so once the year has ended you have until that date. Put the date in your calendar on time, because the Belastingdienst counts its terms from that moment. Filing well before 1 May often also gives you earlier certainty about a refund or an extra payment.

Can I request an extension for my return?

Yes, you can request an extension (uitstel) for your return, usually until 1 September, and through a tax service provider the term can be even longer. Request the extension before the original deadline of 1 May has passed, otherwise it no longer applies. An extension gives room if you are still waiting for details or annual statements.

What is the pre-filled return?

The pre-filled return (vooraf ingevulde aangifte) is a draft that the Belastingdienst has already prepared for you with known data such as your wages and your bank accounts. It is handy, but always check the data yourself, because the responsibility for a correct return stays with you. That way you spot missing deductions or errors yourself.

What happens if I file too late?

If you file too late, you risk a default penalty (verzuimboete) from the Belastingdienst, even if you are still getting money back. So always respond to a reminder or demand and submit the return as soon as possible. If you doubt your provisional assessment in that same year, check whether your provisional assessment is still correct.

How do I file my income tax return?

You file your income tax return (aangifte inkomstenbelasting) online through Mijn Belastingdienst, where you log in with your DigiD. Go through all sections calmly, add any missing items and only send the return once everything is correct. After sending, keep a copy for your own records so you can find everything back later.
